Well my coworkers want me to dip parts of their cars. First, I need to dip all 4 rims of one's Nissan Sentra. Then I need to dip the chrome on the front of back bumpers of another's GMC Sierra. How many cans will I need? I know that a few of you dip enthusiasts are out here!

Kinja'd!!!

Same kind of truck shown here... just the chrome on both.

lots of them LOL.
for the back bumpers: 1 can should do.
front of GMC: 3/4 a can
wheels: 1/2 can each wheel.

make sure you end up with a decent coating (think 2-3 layers at least) otherwise when its time to take it off it will be a BITCH to do.

I'd say on the wheels to go for 4 to 5. Otherwise they'll wear down quickly. That's what I did to the hubcaps on my BMW.

How does this

Kinja'd!!!

keep getting referred to as "dipping", I can't seem to figure it out.

It takes a decent amount, Pete's right, 2-3 layers. Go light on the first few, and lay the final coat on pretty good. It will probably take more than you think, and it depends a lot on the style of wheel as to how much you'll need and waste, so buy an extra can or two - You can always take some back but it sucks to run out in the middle.

Because it looks like it was dipped in liquid plastic.

I guess its just laziness but I see your point about it actually being sprayed.. I just go with what everyone else says :P

And it would really suck if I run out because Im 16 and cannot actually buy it (must be 18 since its an aerosol) ... so Im having them buy it for me

It was a joke ... :P It's been around for many years and IS actually used to dip things in

Kinja'd!!!

...and then they started putting it in rattle cans and for some reason "dip" is still used as a verb it's a pet peeve.

Hah... Yes, isn't that the dumbest thing that you have to be 18 to buy aerosol cans. As if an 18 year old is incapable of committing such heinous crimes with a rattlecan compared to a 16 year old who can pilot a car down the freeway at 70mph just fine.

Drrrr....

I can supposedly huff it and get high....

Now what is stopping an 18 year old from doing so.. idk

Just be careful whose cars you work on. Things can go bad very quickly if they are not happy with your work. I hate to be a buzz-kill but also keep in mind that since you are under 18 you can potentially expose your parents to liability as well.

Lol. It's a crazy world. Don't worry, time flies and all that becomes pretty silly to look back on.

Yeah thanks Im not too worried. They are both young (22 and 23) and really close friends of mine. I've known them for about 6 years now.

Just be cautious, there are always people out there looking to take advantage. I wouldn't go beyond your close friends with it though.

Experienced this just this morning. Bought some PlastiDip for a bicycle frame (it's actually a good frame, but I'm uglifying it to make it less eye-catching to theiving sonsabitches) and had to show my ID; it's been decades since I've been <18...
